History of Our Gharana

I (Zakir Ali) presenting our family history which is written by my father Late Mohd. Ayub Khan urf Babban Deewana.

The family of a muslim singer from Peshawar came to India and settled in the empire of gwalior, that family was Khan Saheb Mohaaz Khan Afghani. In that family a artist was born named Muneer Khan. At that time, the king of Gwalior Empire was Maharaja Man Tanwaar Singh. Meer muneer khan was a very famous and expert artist of music, he was very famous in his time. Raja Man Tanwaar Singh was enough learned this art and was consider as a expert artist in this field. When the singers sing song in front of the king they feel shame. The style of the drupad has been invented by Raja Man Tanwaar Singh, which is still alive. Once, Raaja Man Tanwaar Singh took the test of Meer Muneer Khan and demanded the different types of music but Meer Muneer Khan performed music with the great merit and fulfill the demand of the king and paased in exam. So King Raja Man Tanwaar Singh said that, of course Mr. Muneer Khan liked artist in my court such that everything is in the kothi (cottage). We have conferred the title of Muneer Khan to Meer from today and established the gharana of Meer Muneer Khan as a Kothivan Gharana. From today onwards, the family of Mohaaz Khan and Meer Muneer Khan will be called Kothivaan Gharana and also be called Mohaaz khan baani, and Meer muneer khan was Jadde Amjad of their Gharana.

Meer Muneer Khan went to Lucknow from Gwalior after the dead of King Raja Man Tanwaar Singh. After staying there for a few days, they was resided in the town Jais in District Raebareli.

And as an employee started working in Amethi (it’s a small place in Jais town).

Pre-Mughal era. When the Mughal period started, this art gained great achievement in the Great King Akbar’s court. There was 500 artist appointed in the Court. An artist named Mia Madaar Khan Kalaavant was also appointed in the Great King Akbar’s court, those who were descendants of Meer Muneer Khan. That means Mia Madaar Khan Kalaavant was belong to our Mohaz Khan and Meer Muneer Khan Kothivaan Gharana and our family.

So the Great King Akbar separately established four Gharane and also established their Baani again, as per the name of ours four Great Musician Which is mention below:

  1. Khandari Baani
  2. Mohaz Khan and Madar Khan Kothivaan Gharana and Baani
  3. Miyan Taansen Gharana and Baani
  4. Daagar Gharana and Baani

These four Gharane is belong to Muslim families. Mia Tansen was married in Daagar Ganrana. Mia Tansen’s eldest son Mia Bilaas Khan got married in Mia Mohaz Khan and Madaar Khan Kothivan Gharana that means our Gharana and family. So it was difficult to identify because of the relationship between these three Gharane , who is the person of which gharana.

So Mia Azeemuddin Khan urf Imam Baksh was born after the many descendants of Madaar Khan in the Mohaaz Khan and Madaar Khan Gharana. Azimuddin Khan urf Imam Baksh had borned two artist , named Mia Kamruddeen Khan urf Chand Kha and Miya Shamsuddeen Khan urf Barkuradaar Khan. Both of these artist became very famous music artists in their time. That time was Janab Wajid Ali Shah. Both of them were employees in the court of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. And King Hanumant Singh was the Prime Minister of Nawab Saheb. Those who were the rulers of Kalakakar Empire district Pratapgarh. Hanumant Singh had brought both artists to his state Kalakaakar. Which was a historical incident.

Nawab Wajid Ali Shah often used to say to King Hanumant Singh, that Hanumant Singh, all the courtesy demands something from us but you do not ask me anything. Then King Hanumant Singh used to say that you have given me everything, still, if I feel the need of something, I will definitely ask for it.

Once Mia Kamruddeen Khan urf Chand kha and Mia Shamsuddeen Khan urf Barkhudaar Kha sang such sing a song in the court of Nawab Saheb, that all the tears started flowing through the eyes of the all courtier and Nawab Saheb torn his clothes. There was a strange atmosphere in the entire court. And when the song is over, Then King Hanumant Singh stood up and said that Raja Saheb would ask to you for one thing today if given to me. Nawab Saheb was very happy to hear this and said, I will definitely give you whatever you want, besides my life and my state. King Hanumant Singh said, I do not want anything else, just give this singer’s pair to me. When I listen to them, my heart will get peace. Nawab Saheb said that Hanumant Singh, you has asked for such a thing that Where my court was deserted. Well I gave these two artist to you. Take it but do not come back to me, If it comes back I will have a tremendous complaint to you.

Nawab Saheb gave these two brothers with reward and recognition and said go to Chand Kha and Barkhudaar Kha Saheb from today onwards you have become the singer of my most popular prime minister. King Hanumant Singh brought these two brothers to Kalakakar and both of them gave one one village, named Manipur and Manihari, and five five hundred rupees every month salary and 100 acres of land, and at a luxurious mansion to stay. Both of these brothers started comfortable living life in Kalakakar.

Chand Kha had three boys.

The eldest boy were Mia Mahtaab Kha, his younger boy Mia Badruddeen Khan and youngest boy Mia Mahboob Khan.

Therefore, out of four sons of Mehboob Khan (Mia Chand Khan’s youngest son), my number was the third.

The elder brother was Habib Khan, the second was Brother Mujeeb Kha urf Laddan Khan, the third I, my name was Mohammad Ayub Khan urf Babban Khan, fourth number was my younger brother Mohammad Yakub Khan urf Chhamman Khan.

The only boy of the elder father Mia Mahtaab Kha was bade Yusuf Khan, who was a great masterpiece and unmatched singer in his time.

My brother Mia Abdul Rashid Khan was my aunt’s son (Mother’s sister son). Abdul Rashid Khan was an intense high-profile artist of music. And he was the student of my uncle’s son (Father’s elder brother named Mahtaab Khan), that is, my brother bade Yusuf Khan. Abdul Rasheed Khan was become the student of my elder brother Bade Yusuf Khan. That is why they are also counted in Chand Khan’s family.

Since the father of Abdul Rashid Khan was also Yusuf Khan. Therefore, due to two Yusuf Khan in the family, so both are famous in the family as chhote Yusuf Khan and the bade Yusuf Khan.

The chhote Yusuf Khan was the expert of Qawwali Music.

My elder brother Habeeb Khan and Mujeeb Khan urf Laddan Khan were also famous singer in his time.

Always someone else was coming in the Chand Kha family as an artist.

Miya Barkhudar Khan had four boys.

Mia Wazeer Khan, Mia Pyaare Khan, Mia Shahaab Khan, and Mia Shetaab Khan urf Shaddan Khan.

All boys of my grandfather Janab Barkhudar Khan Sahab, only Mia Wajeer Khan Sahab had famous as a singer in his time. He stayed out of the start and was very less friendly with the people of the family.

After the death of King Hanumant Singh from Kakakakar and Mia Chand Khan, this family moved from KalaKakar to Manikpur and  it stayed the same.

Now we four brothers are divided. My two elder brothers were made the owners of the manikpur property. And we both younger brothers had given a property in Salon District Raebareli. So we moved from Manikpur and settled in Salon, District-Rae Bareli.

This partition was done in my father’s life.

Both of the villages which Hanumant Singh had given to my grandfather, the grandfather gave this back to the king by saying that all the farmers of this village came to me and troubled me, which caused disruption in my worship and my music practice, So you take both of these villages back. We are getting pocket expenses that’s enough for me. So the king fixed a 1000-1000 rupees for each brother instead of 500-500 rupees. Which kept them till they were alive. Village my grandfather himself returned, 100 Acre land distributed free in the farmers. Later, after the death of Raja Hanumant singh and my grandfather, we all were divided into Manikpur and Salon, Kalakakar mansion also left.

After 1947, I came to Ajmer Sharif Rajasthan. And here, with ours children, i got peace and started living our life with the help of the allah and dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.

And through this classical music and light music, I got an opportunity to perform his art by going to the corners of India and also abroad. And the public and the government also appreciated to me.

I am very thankful to my government and the public of India.

Funoone LateefaThree Art of Funoone Lateefa has been running for thousands of years and always will continue these three art in the future and will go further. And the whole world will continue to reflect by their strengths. There are three types of Funoone Lateefa,

  • Mauseeqi (Music)
  • Musawwari (Scatch or Painting)
  • Shayeri (Poetry)

But I will not argue with you on Musawwari and Poetry Art. I will only talk about Mauseeqi (Music) Art. Because my life remained associated with this Art, or understand that this art has inherited me. I learned this art from my father (Late Mahboob Khan Sahab) only for 10 years which I got in a very short period of time. My father started my training whose foundation was very supportive and easy. Due to this reason, this art came very soon in my understanding and there was some glance at the side of God. That’s why I have progressed very fast in this art. Since I myself was learning with great passion and interest and was doing a lot of practice. My father tought so much, that I did not even need another master. Although I also wished and tried to learn from other Master of music, but I could not find the standard of teaching in this art, which was get by my father. I learned this art as much as from my father. I made the purpose and profession of their life. And I performed this art in the corners of India and also continued to learn more about this art. Since this art is like a deep sea, reaching its surface is not only difficult but it is impossible. However, after completing 60 years of my life in this art, when I look at myself, I do not see anything. But I tried my best to achieve this art as much as possible.

Thank you
